Gunnison Nordic Team

The Gunnison Nordic Team is a small but mighty junior racing program, encouraging kids ages 8-18 to be the best they can be - on and off their skis!!

Coached by former Olympic coach, Kendall Butts, and his wife Ingrid, 3x Olympian, GNT offers decades of coaching expertise, experience and wisdom.

GNT offers 3 levels of participation depending on age, attitude and ability. The Development team meets 2x/week, the Competition team meets 3x/week and our new Comp-Plus team meets 4x/week. Both the classic and skate/freestyle ski techniques are coached as well as  training, racing and recovery strategies and tactics. We encourage Gunnison's youth to explore the adventuresome world of cross country skiing, while gaining strength, fitness, character, determination and focus.

Last season, GNT qualified both of their U16 skiers (Bria Rickert & Garrett Butts) for the Jr. National Championships. The '16-17 season looks to be another fun filled winter of Nordic ski racing with both the fun-local ski race series and our out of town RMN qualifiers taking us to Frisco, Aspen, Steamboat and Durango!! Sr Nationals in early January ( World Jr. Trials) is also a possible prospect, as both Bria and Garrett are looking to World Jr. Champs as a goal as well as bettering their results at Jr. Nationals in March - Lake Placid, NY. Much fun and hard work is in store for the Gunnison Nordic Team, as they strive for excellence in all they do!

CB Mountain Sports Team

Crested Butte Mountain Resort is pleased to offer its eighth season of comprehensive mountain sports programs that are available to a wide variety of athletes, from kids learning to ski and ride to driven student athletes. Crested Butte Mountain Sports Team (CBMST) offers various levels of participation beginning with weekend development programs to full-time, competitive based programming.

CBMST Development Programs focus on bringing kids exhibiting strong fundamentals by taking their personal skills to a higher level in alpine racing, snowboarding, freeride, and telemark skiing. Development Programs will introduce athletes to tactical and technical approaches while taking advantage of all the terrain the mountain has to offer.

The primary goal for our athletes is to set them up for success. With this in mind, we have created a developmental pipeline for our participants. This approach aids in creating an environment that allows coaches to focus on athletes’ developmental and skill level in a similar age range. They move through a system that teaches fundamental skills in technical skiing and progresses them towards tactical skills within their specific discipline.

The following is an outline of the development pipeline for athletes and the disciplines offered for each team:

Western’s Mountain Sports skiers and boarders compete on the most competitive circuits, as well as in local and regional competitions, where up-and-coming athletes can cut their teeth and hone their skills.
